High Standards Produce High Performance
Basic Obedience Training This is the first level of training, and is the
essential preparation a dog must have for all levels of training that follow. Basic
obedience provides the foundation from which a dog learns to learn.
Obedience training can begin when your puppy is about five months old, and
should be started no later than two years old. Often, if training is delayed, the puppy will develop bad habits
or behaviors that must be broken before the objective training can begin.
This program requires approximately seven weeks, depending upon the capabilities and temperament of the individual dog. Dogs are taught the verbal commands: No, Sit, Down, Heel, Stay, Here, Come, and Kennel. They will heel on and off lead without forging ahead, lagging behind, crowding, or straying. Dogs that will continue on with field work after obedience training are also introduced to the handler's whistle, and will learn the Stop-whistle command. In addition to the formal training, we develop the dog's social skills - an essential part of proper behavior with other dogs and with unfamiliar people and environments. Upon completion of our basic obedience program, your dog will perform all of the above commands off lead and at a distance. He will be fully capable and prepared to successfully campaign for an AKC Companion Dog obedience title. And, his overall behavior and self-control will make him a pleasure to share your home with.
